Health Care Teams

Professional health care teams of up to four can enroll in regularly scheduled one-day Boston-based workshops of the Program to Enhance Relational and Communication Skills.  Team members are invited to participate together in our experiential workshops that include didactic sessions, realistic enactments with professional actors, and ample opportunities for feedback, self-reflection and discussion.  In addition to the experience as participant-learners, consultation will also be included to help team members identify next steps to bring back to their home institutions. This offering is ideal for health care teams interested in learning about and developing communication and relational learning programs at their own institutions.  Class size ranges from 15-30.

Cost: $495.00 per team member plus an additional $1500.00 includes registration, refreshments, lunch, and course materials; customized half-day consultation session following the workshop; and a copy of our award-winning video entitled, “Difficult Conversations in Pediatric Palliative Care”

Customized Program Development

Health care organizations or initiatives can enroll in a two-day customized workshop focused on program development led by faculty of the Institute for Professionalism & Ethical Practice.  Team members participate together in a customized day-long experiential workshop which includes didactic sessions, realistic enactments with professional actors, and ample opportunities for feedback, self-reflection and discussion.  In addition to the experience as participant-learners during the program, participants spend a second day (either as one full day following the workshop or two half days before and after the workshop) with faculty and performing arts consultants to help team members identify next steps to bring back to their home institutions.  Special opportunities will include learning about the role of simulation and support of professional actors, family faculty, and outcomes evaluation in designing quality educational offerings.  This offering is well-suited for health care organizations and initiatives committed to incorporating communication and relational learning programs in their institutions. Class size limited to 15-25.

Cost: $11,900.00 includes a customized day-long PERCS workshop with registration, refreshments, lunch, and workshop materials; and a full day of consultation devoted to learning about the implementation of communication and relational learning workshops consistent with the PERCS model; and two copies of the series of award-winning videos used in the PERCS workshops.

Customized on-site consultation can be combined with health care team training packages based on expressed needs and goals. Consultation may include a Grand Rounds-style presentation.

Health Care Practitioners

Physicians, nurses, social workers, psychologists, chaplains, and other health care practitioners can enroll in regularly scheduled offerings of the Program to Enhance Relational and Communication Skills (PERCS).  The PERCS: Cardiovascular & Critical Care and the PERCS: NICU workshops are excellent choices for practitioners who wish to learn about and practice difficult health care conversations.  Both workshops provide didactic sessions, realistic enactments with professional actors, and ample opportunities for feedback, self-reflection and discussion.  Class size ranges from 15-30.

Health Care Educators

Difficult Conversations in Healthcare: Teaching and Practice is a faculty development course designed for multidisciplinary healthcare professionals (physicians, social workers, nurses, medical educators and others) interested in and/or involved in teaching in the areas of interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, relationship-centered care, patient-practitioner relationships and related topics. This course is offered in partnership with the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Educators in the Health Professions.

The course offers an introduction to our philosophy and pedagogy organized from the perspective of relational learning.  The course incorporates narrative learning approaches, realistic enactments with professional actors, facilitated debriefing, discussion, and reflection.  Special emphasis will be placed on considering how features of our approach to relational learning can be integrated into participants’ educational programs in participants’ home institutions. The course provides teaching and learning strategies for the communication skills and professionalism competencies required by many regulatory organizations including the ACGME and others around the globe. Class size ranges from 25-30.
